“What a Day!!!” That was the joyful refrain from the African Ministry Fund team as the Microfinancing Conference in Juja, Kenya, came to a close.
More than 300 participants gathered at the Precious Blood Secondary School gym for a day of prayer, celebration, and reflection. Organized by Sister Mary Paul Wamatu, the conference brought together microfinancing groups from near and far — including travelers from Mombasa, three hours away, and Meru, nearly five hours away. Their commitment was evident before the program even began.
The day opened with Mass, grounding the gathering in faith and gratitude. Sister Mary Paul then welcomed everyone, thanking them for the sacrifices made to attend. As groups introduced themselves, they presented gifts of fruit to Sister Mary Paul and the African Ministry Fund team — a simple but meaningful expression of appreciation. The room was filled with excitement, pride, and joy.
Sister Toni Temporiti addressed the assembly, sharing a powerful personal story. During her sabbatical in Africa, women once asked her questions that changed her life: How far do you walk for water? Are there poor people in America? How do you decide which child to feed each day? These questions planted the seeds for a deeper understanding of poverty and opportunity.
She then reflected on her grandmother’s story — a widow who received a small loan after losing her husband. That loan allowed her to begin a business, raise her ten children, and pass on strength and resilience to future generations. “I am named after my grandmother,” Sister Toni shared, “and she continues to inspire me.”
Lunch followed, prepared and served by the Precious Blood Secondary School catering students. The meal — rice, potatoes, chicken, and watermelon — was a testament to teamwork and skill, especially impressive considering it served more than 300 guests.
The conference concluded with prayers and blessings, sending participants home encouraged and hopeful. Sister Mary Paul, who poured her heart into organizing the event, was filled with gratitude and joy. The day stood as a beautiful reminder of the power of faith, community, and shared purpose.
