Water in Africa is always a challenge. In Juja, Kenya, it is a daily concern for the Precious Blood complex, where the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood serve hundreds of children and families. On this property, the Sisters operate:

• A farm

• A primary school (PP1/Kindergarten through 8th grade) with over 200 students

• An orphanage that is home to more than 100 children

• A staff of 51 dedicated workers

  
  

Thanks to a generous grant from the Hilton Foundation, Sister Esther successfully drilled a well to supply water to the farm, school, and orphanage. It was a tremendous blessing.

But there is still a serious problem. The well’s water must be shared among all three ministries. When the farm needs water, the flow to the orphanage is compromised and vice versa. Compounding the challenge is climate change — this region of Kenya can no longer rely on consistent rainfall to supplement their needs.

The Solution Is Within Reach

The Home has already acquired four large water storage tanks. These tanks will allow water to be pumped and stored at night, ensuring a steady and reliable supply throughout the day for all three ministries.

But the tanks cannot function until they are installed.

The cost to make this happen:

• Materials: 645,875 KS — $5,011 USD

• Labor: 162,500 KS — $1,261 USD

• Total Installation Cost: $6,272 USD

For just $6,272, we can secure dependable water for over 300 children and the staff who care for them.

Why This Matters

There are 21 cows on the farm. Cows require consistent hydration to produce milk. More water means better milk yield. Better milk means stronger nutrition for the children in the orphanage and improved lunches for students in the primary school.

In addition to the dairy cows, the farm raises pigs and chickens and maintains a vegetable garden, all of which depend on reliable water. A steady supply supports food production, reduces costs, and strengthens sustainability for the entire mission.
